What is a Bone Graft?
Bone grafting refers to the replacement of lost or missing bone. This may be in the jaw following surgery or trauma, or it may be in the alveolar bone, the part of your jaw that holds your teeth.
Bone grafting is also used to repair bone that has been lost around teeth if you have suffered from severe gum disease and provides the jaw with increased bone height and width.
Not only does the bone graft replace bone that has been lost, but it also encourages regrowth of your own healthy bone.
Why would you need a Bone Graft?
The most common reason for bone grafting surgery is to replace bone so that Dental Implants can be placed.
Your own bone can be harvested from sites including the hip, chin, lower jaw or an artificial bone can be used depending on the amount of bone required and surgical requirements. Artificial bone can also be used and Dr. Mehanna and Dr Yang will be able to discuss the best option to suit your individual needs.
Preparation
You will need a specialized 3d Scan before your surgery to study the anatomy of your jaws, which will enable the accurate assessment of the require bone. This 3d Scan is bulk billed and will be undertaken at the time of your consultation
